Tapio Paarma, who has headed the adaptation of AB Lietuvos Telekomas into a modern telecommunications company since 1998, will leave his position as General Manager as of 1 May 2003 in order to return to TeliaSonera AB.
With Tapio Paarma at the helm, AB Lietuvos Telekomas has implemented an unbelievable change. In principle the fixed telephone network in Lithuania has been updated from analogue technology to modern digital technology. Parallel to this and from an operational point of view, AB Lietuvos Telekomas has changed to a company in line with the best European fixed network operators as regards future possibilities.

Tapio Paarma will leave his position as General Manager on 1st of May 2003. As of 1 May2003 Kjell-Ove Blom has been appointed as General Manager of AB Lietuvos Telekomas until a new General Manager for the company has been recruited.

Tapio Paarma will act as a Senior Advisor to new General Manager Mr. Kjell Ove Blom until the end of this year to secure that the company has a smooth transition period. “The Company is entering into the new stage of business with the liberalization in process. I have performed my duties from the date the Company was privatized and it is now good to see how the Company is performing. With the Annual General Meeting approaching on 28 April 2003, where the results of the Company’s activities in 2002 will be presented, it is a good time to transfer responsibilities. I am ready to give advice and help the Company until the end of this year,” says Tapio Paarma.

”Tapio Paarma has made a great contribution by adopting and laying out the foundations of the modern company that AB Lietuvos Telekomas is today,” says Erik Hallberg, TeliaSonera AB, Senior Vice President and Head of market area Baltic Countries. TeliaSonera AB is the major shareholder of AB Lietuvos Telekomas with 60% shareholding in the company.

”The measures, which Tapio Paarma so successfully has taken, have changed Lithuania from a country with an old-fashioned telecommunications infrastructure to one of the most advanced countries in Europe,” says Gintautas Zintelis, Chairman of the Board of AB Lietuvos Telekomas. ”Today we are ready for a future with increased competition and a forthcoming EU membership. We will continue to work for Lietuvos Telekomas being the best choice for our customers,” he continues.

Kjell-Ove Blom, who will temporarily carry the baton as General Manager, has a solid experience of managing companies undergoing big changes. He comes from a position as CEO of Netia Poland. AB Lietuvos Telekomas will immediately start the recruitment process for a new General Manager. ”Quite naturally, we want to recruit a new General Manager from Lithuania, the task of whom is to continue to develop the company,” says Erik Hallberg.
